On April 16, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) hosted a CAS Talk titled “Writer Duong Nghiem Mau and the work ‘Current of Dissociation’.” The session was led by Dr. Jason Picard, a faculty member at CAS. With his strong academic background and interdisciplinary approach, the talk offered both scholarly insight and emotional depth into a distinctive figure in Vietnamese literature.
During the session, participants had the opportunity to explore the literary journey of Duong Nghiem Mau (1936-2016), particularly through his work ‘Current of Dissociation’. Through fragments of life and personal memory, the author presents themes in a way that is both authentic and nuanced, while remaining highly evocative. This approach not only reflects the depth of human experience but also encourages multidimensional reflections on identity, memory, and adaptation during periods of transition.
Beyond existential reflections, the talk also invited participants to reconsider the value of peace and the foundations shaped through different historical periods. In this sense, literature becomes a “lens” through which we can understand the past not only intellectually, but also empathetically, opening up deeper perspectives on modern Vietnamese history.
Let’s take a look back at some memorable moments from this talk with CAS!
