Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Economics (BA in Economics) program aims to train experts for businesses and organizations by equipping students with critical thinking, creativity, and analytical skills grounded in economic theory. Graduates will gain comprehensive knowledge, decision-making abilities, and policy analysis skills, enabling them to work in various sectors, including business, research, education, and government. They will also be prepared for further studies in Master’s and Doctoral programs domestically and internationally.

Program Mission

The overall objective of the Bachelor of Arts in Economics program is to train experts for businesses and organizations by equipping students with critical thinking, creativity, and
analytical skills with the foundation of economic theory and tools. After completing the program, students are expected to gain comprehensive knowledge and thinking capacity, decision-making skills, grasp of market rules, and policy analysis to be able to work flexibly in suitable positions in economic, business, research, educational, governmental, and non-governmental organizations. In addition to the above, students are also expected to be able to pursue professional development in Master’s and Doctoral programs in the same or other related fields at domestic and foreign universities.

Course Objectives

First, to equip students with the fundamental and core knowledge of Marxist–Leninist Political Economy in the context of contemporary economic development in Vietnam and the world. The course ensures foundational, systematic, scientific, and updated knowledge that is connected with practice, creativity, skills, thinking capacity, learner qualities, and interdisciplinary continuity. It also aims to reduce overlap, strengthen integration, ease the learning load, and remove outdated or overly theoretical content that is no longer suitable for non-theory-major students at colleges and universities.

Second, on that basis, to develop students’ thinking, analytical and evaluative skills, and ability to identify the nature of economic interest relations in the country’s socio-economic development. The course also contributes to helping students build an appropriate sense of social responsibility in their future careers and life after graduation.

Third, to contribute to building students’ standpoint and ideological awareness of Marxism–Leninism.

Course Objectives

Knowledge: Students will acquire the most fundamental and core knowledge of Scientific Socialism, one of the three constituent components of Marxism–Leninism.

Skills: Students will enhance their practical understanding and ability to apply knowledge of Scientific Socialism to examining and evaluating the country’s political and social issues related to socialism and Vietnam’s path toward socialism.

Attitude: Students will develop an appropriate political and ideological attitude toward the course of Scientific Socialism in particular, and toward the ideological foundation of the Party in general.

Objectives:

Knowledge: Students will understand the basic knowledge of the concept, origins, formation, and development of Ho Chi Minh Thought; the fundamental contents of Ho Chi Minh Thought; and the application of Ho Chi Minh Thought by the Communist Party of Vietnam in the people’s national democratic revolution and the socialist revolution.

Skills: Students will develop the ability to think independently, analyze, evaluate, and creatively apply Ho Chi Minh Thought to solving issues in real-life contexts, study, and work.

Course Objectives

Content: To provide students with systematic and fundamental knowledge of the formation of the Communist Party of Vietnam (1920–1930); the Party’s leadership in the Vietnamese revolution during the struggle for power (1930–1945); the two resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism (1945–1975); and the cause of national construction and defense during the period when the whole country transitioned to socialism and carried out the Doi Moi reform process (1975–2018).

Ideology: Through historical events and experiences of the Party’s leadership, students will develop an awareness of respecting objective truth, while strengthening their sense of pride and belief.

Skills: To equip students with scientific thinking methods in the study of history, skills in selecting research and learning materials for the course, and the ability to apply historical understanding to practical work, as well as to critique incorrect views on the history of the Party.

This course exposes and engages students with a variety of different global perspectives on important issues of the day. Each week the seminar will be led by a different faculty member or guest speaker who will choose a topic, assign pre-class reading, and organize the class activities. Potential contemporary issues include Chat GPT and AI, the aging crisis, immigration, globalization, the new space race, Industry 4.0, etc.

This course introduces students to more advanced topics in reasoning, logic, and the topics of evidence and testing in science. In deductive reasoning students advance in topics in critical thinking to include first-order predicate calculus and modal logic. In statistical reasoning students learn the axioms of probability theory, Bayesian confirmation theory and issues in the confirmation of scientific theories including advanced topics from the Hypothetical-Deductive Method and
Falsificationism.

This course introduces and elaborates on the concept of development and the role of sustainability. The course would engage the ideas of development from an interdisciplinary and multi dimensional perspective. The course content aims to answer questions such as: what is development? How does development happen? What contributes to development? Why do the development stories differ at the country, regional, and global levels? Besides the theoretical

The Development Economics course explores the foundations of policy making in developing countries. The goal is to spell out various policy options and to quantify the trade-offs between them. We will study the different facets of human development: education, health, gender, the family, land relations, risk, informal and formal norms and institutions. This is an empirical class. For each topic, we will study several concrete examples chosen from around the world.
While studying each of these topics, we will ask: What determines the decisions of poor households in developing countries? What constraints are they subject to? The Strategy and Information course is an advanced course in game theory. We begin with a rigorous overview of the main equilibrium concepts for non-cooperative games in both static and dynamic settings with either complete or incomplete information. We define and explore properties of iterated strict dominance, rationalizability, Nash equilibrium, subgame perfection, sequential, perfect, and proper equilibria, the intuitive criterion, and iterated weak dominance.

The Financial Crisis course is an introduction to the economic theories of financial crises. It focuses on amplification mechanisms that exacerbate crises, such as leverage, fire sales, bank runs, interconnections, and complexity. It also analyzes the different perspectives on the origins of crises, such as mistaken beliefs and moral hazard, and discusses the optimal regulation of the financial system. The course draws upon examples from financial crises around the world, especially the recent subprime financial crisis.

Minors

The College of Arts and Sciences does not require students to complete a minor. However, pursuing a minor allows you to take advantage of the extensive offerings across the university. There are a few rules to keep in mind when considering a minor. Similar to majors, you must
complete all upper-division courses for a minor at VinUni. The minimum credits required for a 4-year program is 120 credits. If a minor is included, the total should be 135 credits (120 credits for the major plus 15 credits for the minor). You may not take any minor requirements on Pass/No Pass basis, and you must earn a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all courses required for the minor. The requirements for most minors are straightforward. However, just like majors, some minors require careful sequencing of courses. If you have any questions about the requirements for completing a minor, you should consult the advisor in the department offering the minor.
